The most used expressions to ask for information about weather in Italian are:

  • Com’è il tempo?
    • How’s the weather?
  • Che tempo fa?
    • What’s the weather like?
  • Che tempo fa fuori?
    • What is it like outside?
  • Come sono le previsioni per oggi / domani / questa settimana?
    • What’s the weather forecast for today / tomorrow / this week?

As you have probably noticed in the second and third questions we will use the verb FARE a little difference with English where you would use the verb to be.

How can you reply to that? You can use different sentences:

The first formula is with Fare + adjective

  • Stamattina fa davvero caldo!
    • This morning it’s really hot!
  • Ieri ha fatto freddo.
    • Yesterday it was very cold.
  • Ieri sera faceva più fresco.
    • It was cooler yesterday.
  • Questa settimana farà brutto.
    • This week will have bad weather.

The other option is using the verb Essere + adjective

  • Oggi il cielo è pieno di nuvole è nuvoloso!
    • Today the sky is full of clouds, it’s cloudy.
  • Il mese scorso è stato davvero un mese piovoso!
    • Last month was really rainy!
  • Oggi è molto soleggiato!
    • Today is a very sunny day.
  • C’è troppa umidità, è afoso!
    • It’s too humid, it’s muggy.

The third formula that I want to teach you is c’è / ci sono + noun

  • C’è bel tempo oggi!
    • It’s nice weather today!
  • C’era un vento forte in spiaggia!
    • There was a strong wind at the beach.
  • A novembre spesso c’è la nebbia!
    • In the month of November we often have fog.

Here are some useful sentences that you can use just like you see them to talk about nice weather:

  • Fa fresco. - It’s chilly / cool
  • È sereno / é limpido - It’s clear
  • È secco. - It’s dry
  • C’è bel tempo. - It’s good / nice weather
  • È soleggiato. / C’è il sole - It’s sunny
  • Fa caldo - It’s warm

Here are the opposites… so if you need to talk about bad weather:

  • Fa un tempo orribile - It’s awful weather
  • Pioviggina - It’s drizzling
  • Nevischia - It’s snowing a little bit
  • Fa cattivo tempo. / E’ brutto -The weather is bad
  • C’è afa. / è afoso. -It’s muggy
  • È nuvoloso - t’s cloudy
  • Fa freddo - It’s cold
  • C’è la nebbia - It’s foggy
  • È uggioso - It’s gloomy
  • È umido - It’s humid
  • Fa freddissimo - It's very cold
  • Si gela - It's freezing
  • È piovoso - It’s rainy
