So veggies… ok Italians have a true passion for vegetables we love them so much that many of us have what is called ORTO!

L’orto is a vegetable garden and you can find one in many Italian backyards… especially after COVID and the lockdown situation in February 2020 many Italian families entertained themselves by growing vegetable in their backyard! I find it too hard and honestly I’m a bit too lazy to keep up with it but I admire those that do it and that have those fresh vegetables from their gardens!

Since I’m not very good at growing plants in general I purchase veggies!

You can buy them at the supermercato - the supermaket or at a place called ortofrutta or fruttivendolo which are places which usually sell both vegetables and fruit.

We Italian also have a passion for street markets so usually once a week in every town in Italy, big or small, you can find local fruit or vegetables sold at local produce markets… usually super yummy and very healthy!

Here is some Italian vocabulary on vegetables:

The question that I will ask in the video is:

Cosa cresce nel mio orto? (what grows in my veggie garden?)

You will use the verb CRESCERE - to grow.

So for singular nouns you will say CRESCE and for plural nouns you will say CRESCONO.

Nel mio orto cresce:

  • l’insalata - salad
  • la lattuga - lettuce
  • i cetrioli - cucumber
  • le zucchine - zucchini
  • le melanzane - eggplant
  • i fagiolini - peas
