I giorni della settimana: the days of the week:

  • lunedì (Monday)
  • martedì (Tuesday)
  • mercoledì (Wednesday)
  • giovedì (Thursday)
  • venerdì (Friday)
  • sabato (Saturday)
  • domenica (Sunday)

You will notice immediately two things!

  1. lunedì all the way to venerdì all end with a I that has a little accent on it. Please remember to say that accent and put a stress on that last syllable.
  2. the other difference is that unlike in the English language you will NOT need to use a capital letter when you write the names of the week.

In English if you need to talk about a recurring event that happens every Monday you will simply say on Monday, so you will make Monday plural. Take note that in Italian you will never have a plural version of the words lunedì, martedì mercoledì… they will always be like that.

To say that something happens every Friday or on Fridays you will simply add an article before the name of the week.

So for example if I wanted to say that a new video lesson is out on Friday I will simply say:

il venerdì ci sarà un nuovo video

You will always use article IL before all the names of the week EXCEPT for Sunday DOMENICA. in this case you will use LA domenica

  •  il lunedì - every Monday
  •  il martedì every Tuesday
  •  il mercoledì - every Wednesday
  •  il giovedì every Thursday
  •  il venerdì every Friday
  •  il sabato every Saturday
  •  la domenica  every Sunday

If you omit the article then you will be saying that something will be happening on the following Monday, Tuesday or whatever day.

Il video esce venerdì means the video will be out on Friday but not necessarily every Friday.

I mesi - The months

  •  gennaio – January
  •  febbraio – February
  •  marzo – March
  •  aprile – April
  •  maggio – Mai
  •  giugno – June
  •  luglio – July
  •  agosto – August
  •  settembre – September
  •  ottobre – October
  •  novembre – November
  •  dicembre – December

Months are also not capitalized in the written form. Be careful there are lots of months with double letters! Don’t miss those when you write them out! This is a common mistake that I often see!

Now let’s practice using the months.

Io sono nata a maggio! This sentence means I was born in May. Write in the comments under the video your birth month!

Or any other sentence with a month in it! For example:

  • Natale è a dicembre
  • Vado in vacanza ad agosto
  • Il prossimo mese è maggio
  • A novembre fa freddo
